The building housing the National Passport Information Center is a green facility that was completed in the fall of 2009. Previously a warehouse, more than 10% of the materials in the building contains recycled content—including steel, carpet, insulation, ceiling tiles, and concrete. Low-emitting paints, adhesives, sealants, and furniture were used to protect the indoor air quality and more than 90% of all appliances and equipment in the building are energy-star rated, reducing the building’s energy footprint. This building showcases how universal design and sustainable building practices can create a cost-effective, efficient, accessible and beautiful space that allows people, regardless of their ability, to feel included, welcomed and empowered.
