Why would anyone ever want to leave perfect weather, abundant beaches, and diverse culture? Many wouldn’t, but for travelers laid over in San Diego on the way to their final international destination, the last thing on their mind is staying put; especially, if they’re stranded because of an issue with their passport. Currently, travelers with passport emergencies driving to Mexico or flying from San Diego International Airport must go to the Los Angeles Passport Agency, a two-hour drive up the coast, for assistance. In spring 2011, travelers will only have to make a short commute to downtown San Diego.
Easily accessible by public transportation and literally minutes from the airport, the San Diego Passport Agency will provide in-person passport services to customers who need to travel in less than two weeks or within four weeks if a visa is needed for an international destination. The agency will complement the network of 118 non-Department passport application acceptance facilities (including post offices, libraries, and other local government offices) already serving the San Diego area and nearby communities. With new travel requirements in effect since June 2007, the agency will continue to improve our ability to meet the travel needs of Americans in several states along our southern border.
The first priority of our existing passport agencies is to serve Americans with urgent travel. Undoubtedly, the San Diego Passport Agency will join the ranks as a saving grace for travelers who bought their ticket to paradise, before checking the expiration date of their passport. For this pre-vacation scare and more, we are here to serve Americans around the country, and soon, in San Diego.
